South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (SAVES) in Asheville, NC is seeking a full-time Veterinary Assistant to join our Oncology team. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced Veterinary Assistant who enjoys advanced medicine, working alongside skilled, specialized veterinarians, and being closely involved in patient care from admission through discharge. Schedule

• Full-Time
• Tuesday–Friday
• 10-hour shifts
• 7:30AM - 5:30PM

Responsibilities

• Assist with oncology patient exams, treatments, and daily patient care
• Support patients receiving chemotherapy treatment with appropriate training and safety protocols in place
• Perform bloodwork and assist with CTs, radiographs, and other diagnostic procedures
• Prepare oncology patients for chemotherapy using proper safety and administration protocols
• Obtain patient histories, restrain patients, and assist clinicians during appointments and procedures
• Record vitals, weight, and other patient data accurately in the medical record
• Prepare and maintain exam rooms, treatment spaces, and equipment
• Communicate with clients in person, by phone, and by email regarding appointments, updates, and discharge instructions
• Fill prescriptions, schedule follow-up visits, and provide take-home care instructions
• Assist with hospital admissions, patient intake, and discharge processes
• Support animal care needs including feeding, walking, bathing, cage cleaning, and monitoring comfort
• Restock supplies and ensure all spaces are cleaned and prepared based on designated protocols
• Maintain accurate medical records and ensure a clean, organized hospital environment

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Veterinary Assistant, preferably in ECC or specialty medicine
• Current RVT students are encouraged to apply
• Experience with surgical patient preparation and sterile technique
• Strong animal handling and restraint skills
• Proficiency in venipuncture and peripheral catheter placement
• Knowledge of medication administration through multiple routes
• Ability to accurately monitor and document patient vital signs
• Familiarity with in-house diagnostics including CBC/Chem, electrolytes, urinalysis, and iStat
• Strong medical record-keeping and organizational skills
• Exceptional client communication and service skills
• Ability to work effectively with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other team members
• Ability to lift at least 35 pounds and stand for extended periods
• Fluent English speaking and reading skills required.
